US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell is likely to improve the relationship between the United States and India after its row about the fate of Indian Diplomat Devyani Khobragade in New York, who had been charged for falsifying the Visa of her househelp. Delhi had advanced a series of diplomatic retaliation against the United States after the arrest of Khobragade, who had been allowed to return to India on condition that she will never step foot on the US without a criminal charge.
The Indian US Embassy was stripped of barricades when a US delegation visited. The delegation had also been snubbed by Indian High Officials because of the incident.
Authorities detained Khobragade in New York after they discovered her househelp, who complained to authorities for being underpaid, had falsified documents by the Indian diplomat.
The Indian Express, a local newspaper, said that her resignation could be seen as a “great help” to the diplomatic row between the two countries.
Many Indians were offended upon finding that Khobragade was strip-searched by US authorities upon discovery of her falsified documents. She was set free by the US Courts because of her diplomatic immunity, but had been warned to leave the country by January and never to return or else she will be tried for criminal charges yet again.
